Hello. I am going to build a Grigorisword from Supernatural. My problem is, the blade is a triangle or pyramid. And I have no idea how to build it. Can you help me please? Thank you.
For this, the shape is fairly simple, but it may take a bit of imagination.
Did you ever make pyramid shapes out of paper in school as a kid? If not, this is what the shape this is (technically called a tetrahedron) looks like flattened out:
If you imagine taking the outer corners of this shape and pulling them upwards, towards the center and out towards yourself, you will end up with a shape that is a regular tetrahedron – a pyramid with a triangular base.
This isn’t the proportion of shape that you want, but the basic concept is the same. If you make the sides (so the two yellow and one dark orange) pieces longer, while keeping the base (center triangle, light orange) the same size, when you pull those sides up, you will have a longer and thinner pyramid. If you need one side to be thicker or thinner than the others, then you would change the proportions of the triangle at the base, all while making sure that the triangles for the sides have the same length of line that touches the base as the base itself.
So, to illustrate:
It’s ugly and not symmetrical because I did this freehand with the line tool in Paint, but you can see the concept here – if you grabbed those three orange dots at the tips and pulled them up and towards you, towards the center, you would have a shape a lot more similar to the blade you are trying to make. Imagine that the small triangle in the center is the part of the blade that is up against the hilt, and that the long triangles are the sides of the blade.
You will absolutely need to do a bit of math and use precise measurements for this project, but the basic shape itself is simple, and if you are doing the blade as the same size all the way around, you only need to make one triangle and then copy it for the other two.
Use a material that will remain stiff enough for a blade, but won’t be too sharp to have at a con. Cardboard, thin plastic, and reinforced EVA foam would all be good options. You may need to put a thin dowel through the center, depending on your materials, in order to help keep the shape stable.
I hope that helps! Good luck! :]
